When God Invites You To Dream Outside Your Abilities

Twenty-two years ago, someone asked me a question. My answer to that question was the first time I would give voice to the God-dream burning inside me.

The question: “If you knew you wouldn’t fail, what is one thing you would love to do?”

My answer: “I would write a book for those worn from the hardships of life. A book that would infuse them with the hope found in the faithfulness of God.”

As the words tumbled out of my mouth, I felt a shift inside me. This dream was going to happen. I didn’t know when, where, or how. But I knew at some point, the story God had been writing in me would spill out of me.

Then in 2017, God invited me to chase the dream with Him during prayer. At that moment, I felt like Alice from Wonderland, braving a dark rabbit hole of uncertainty and discovering the adventure of a lifetime. I was thrilled and frightened all at the same time.

It did not take long for the thrill of the adventure to be overshadowed by fear. I could sympathize with Moses, who was called to lead the Children of Israel but made it clear to God that he was ill-equipped for the job.

I began to tell God why I was not fit for this dream.

  • I know nothing about publishing a book.
  • I don’t know where to begin.
  • Who will want to hear what I have to say?
  • There are so many great authors. Who am I?

The list of all my inadequacies continued until I was sure God understood He had the wrong girl.

And when I had finished pleading my case of why I couldn’t, God presented His side of why I should.

“My daughter, you are correct. You can’t, but I can. Apart from me, you can do nothing. But in me, you will burst forth with life. If you will trust me, lean into me, oh what adventures we will experience together. When you reach the end of yourself, you get a front-row seat to my wondrous ways.”

I am the sprouting vine, and you’re my branches. As you live in union with me as your source, fruitfulness will stream from within you—but when you live separated from me, you are powerless.

John 15:5

Has God ever given you a dream, a call, or a task that seemed way beyond your skill set? Have you ever argued with God about why He picked the wrong person? Then, my friend, you are positioned to see delights and wonders from the heart of the Father that is reserved for those who choose surrender.

Five years ago, God won. I said “yes” to the dream. And oh my, what wondrous grace and glory God has shown me on this adventure. Despite many setbacks, I am learning things about myself and God that I would not have learned from the safe space of familiarity. In my lack, His strength shines through.

But he answered me, “My grace is always more than enough for you, and my power finds its full expression through your weakness.”

2 Corinthians 12:9a

Is God inviting you to step out of your comfort zone? It may be to talk to a neighbor about God’s grace or lead a bible study. Maybe he is opening doors for a new vocation or asking you to take a mission trip. Whatever God is asking you, say “YES.” Because when God invites you to join Him, it is never about what you can’t do but what God can do through you to shine His glory around you.
