All Creatures Great and Small…on the Table

Wonder…have you lost it?   Are there still things in this world that make you step back, take a deep breath, and sigh in amazement?  All that is glorious so often takes a backseat to anxious thoughts and fears brought on by the unrest of the day.  Why is it that the volume of negativity can so quickly drown out all the splendors that our God so graciously created? These creations, both great and small are there to remind us that He is with us at every turn.

God gave me a momentary reminder of “wonder”.  One of my grandsons Boo had been playing in the backyard, fervently and meticulously gathering fallen leaves, cupping them in his little hands as though he had just collected a brilliant spring bouquet.  He approached me cautiously so as not to disrupt the arrangement and carefully laid them in my hands. With the same caution, I took the arrangement of crisp leaves and laid them on the kitchen table. Apparently, my response pleased Boo because within twenty minutes half of my table was covered in a blanket of leaves.

Concerned with the many “creatures” that were most likely homesteading on my table, I encouraged Boo to help me make a special pile of leaves on the back patio, to allow any bugs living in them to crawl away.

As we began our second trip out the back door, hands loaded, there “it” was.   It had the appearance of the cross between a ladybug and a black beetle. “See Boo, this is what Naynay was talking about.  We need to let him go outside.”  As he gently picked up the bug in his hand he said, “Oh Naynay, he is gorgeous!”  What I had chosen to see as a pest in my house, Boo with childlike faith, captured the intricate beauty that had been masterfully crafted by a Mighty Creator.  Wonder, I almost missed it.

The Heavens Declare the glory of God, the firmament shows His handiwork.  Day after day utters speech, night unto night shows knowledge. There is no speech nor language where His voice is not heard.

Psalm 19:1

Dear loving Father, Creator of heaven and earth, far too often the cares of this world, shift my focus from the fact that You alone are God.  Nothing escapes You or surprises You. Many things are going on in the world, in my life that make my heart unsettled and fearful. When I focus on these things Lord, I lose sight of You and Your greatness.  Forgive me. May today be filled with the wonder of You.
